KUIS has a collection of 15,000 volumes from the library of the late American
poet, critic, essayist, translator, playwright, painter, and Japanologist
Kenneth Rexroth (1905-82).
Rexroth led the postwar San Francisco Poetry Renaissance, which inspired humane
movements in the 1960’s international Counter Culture. He has been widely read
in many countries, especially in Japan, which he visited five times for
lectures, poetry performances with Japanese music, research, and writing many
translations and poems about this country, its culture, and Buddhism.
These volumes of literature in English, Japanese, and other languages, cultural
and political history, philosophy and religions East and West, folklore and
other subjects that inspired Rexroth’s diverse writings are catalogued for
reading under special conditions. The collection also includes all of his
published books as well as scholarly books on his life and work. Visitors are
invited to make arrangements with the KUIS Library at
