No matter how many classes students
attend, the most important part
of learning a foreign language is
how much and how well students can
study outside of class. In June
2001, KUIS opened the Self-Access
Learning Centre (SALC) as a place
where students can study in a warm,
welcoming environment, where they
can access a large variety of materials,
and where they can talk to a counsellor
about developing their language
learning skills and solving their
language learning problems.
Students can improve their English,
Spanish, Korean, Chinese and Thai
by watching DVDs and videos, reading
and listening to novels, and using
computer software on CD-ROMs. Worksheets
and texts provide a perfect opportunity
to learn grammar, pronunciation
and business English, or to practice
for TOEIC and TOEFL tests. The SALC
allows students to progress at their
own pace and convenience, in their
own style.
Students are given free access to
a counselling service. Students
can talk with the counsellor who
will help them find the best way
to study for themselves. In this
way, students are helped to become
truly independent language learners.
