Since the introduction of economic reforms, China's economy has shown remarkable economic growth. Also the economic transactions between Japan and China such as the joint ventures and advances into each other's markets have become more and more active. In order to meet current demands, the department of Chinese is designed to foster mediators between the two countries. Of course, the key factor is Chinese proficiency - mastering 5,000 Chinese words is set as one of the standards, for this minimum is said to be enough to reach two general objectives; reading Chinese papers and having conversation.

In the freshman year, you are to concentrate on improving pronunciation and mastering the foundations of grammar, conversation, and vocabulary. In the sophomore year, your Chinese proficiency is developed mainly in a language laboratory. Students learn practical Chinese in classes of about 30 people actively communicating with the teacher. And when you advance to the junior and senior levels, not only you make use of the Chinese proficiency you have developed, but you also begin to study further about a field you are interested in, such as culture, history, literature, or economy. Also at the junior and senior levels, as for the linguistics curriculum, these classes emphasize speech and discussion designed to improve your ability to give an opinion in Chinese about a theme at a complex level.

This department features a close relationship between teachers and students in a frank and open atmosphere. International exchange is also active. Every year students work as volunteer interpreters at the requests of Chiba prefecture or Chiba City for Chinese visitors who come to Japan for various purposes.
