The
base of theoretical and applied linguistics research
The Graduate School of Language Science at Kanda
University of International Studies has professors with
excellent research results and teaching experience,
as well as modernized research facilities. We pursue
research activity to establish a base of theoretical
and applied linguistics research. Since 1996, when the
COE (the central research base of language science)
was established, the full-time instructors, researchers
who have a doctoral degree, graduate school students,
and eminent researchers belonging to the other domestic
and foreign universities or research institutes have
participated in joint research. The school's purpose
is to make international contributions to many fields
of modern language study and to foster excellent young
researchers.
The graduate school offers two majors in the master's
program and one in the doctoral program. In the former
program, the majors are separated into English linguistics
and Japanese linguistics. In both courses, basic training
about logic and description is included in order to
establish a base of broad fields of applied research
such as theoretical linguistics research, foreign language
pedagogy, social linguistics, mechanical language processing,
psycholinguistics, and neuro-linguistics including speech
impediment and the appropriate treatment. As for foreign
language pedagogy, a substantial curriculum is offered
on the basis of general theory of language education.
Emphasis on continuing education
In the graduate school, continuing education is emphasized.
In order to create a curriculum to provide a schedule
to foster experts, all lessons are given from the afternoon
to the evening (the first period begins at 1:50 p.m.
and the eighth period ends at 8:00 p.m.). These times
enable adult students to take lessons at night and to
cope with both jobs and schoolwork.
For adult students who desire to reacquaint themselves
in fields closely related to language research and education,
the system of admitting adult students on the basis
of recommendation was started in 1999. Such adult students
are expected to motivate and inspire other students
with less experience in society.
