The
main themes of the Doctoral program are a detailed advanced
description of language, the construction of linguistic
theory and verification of the theory by internal and
external evidence. In the master's program, documents
written in Japanese and four foreign languages (English,
Spanish, Chinese, and Korean-each of which is offered
as a major at the university) are used for the direction
of education and research. In the doctoral program,
language specialists excluding those in the aforementioned
languages are admitted as, in order to contribute evidence
towards the theoretical linguistics research aimed at
the construction of Universal Grammar, we need to look
above and beyond those langauges. As for external evidence,
experiments concerning language acquisition and speech
impediment, neuro-linguistics, and verification by means
of language processing by computers are promoted as
a promising directions in research.
The Doctoral program is designed to foster research
on theoretical linguistics, the theory of language acquisition,
the theory of language education, as well as advanced
research on the grammar of each language. The academic
training in the program must be useful and indispensable
for talented people who have an important role in various
interdisciplinary fields.
